14 million hectares.
That’s the size of BC’s provincial park system -- and the size of the area Premier Christy Clark now wants to open up for oil and gas exploration.
If there was ever a place to draw a line in the sand, then this is it. If we let the oil industry expand into our treasured parks, then it’s hard to say where this might end -- and other provinces could quickly follow suit.
Already, a record number of Canadians -- literally hundreds of thousands of us -- have spoken out against this new law. I wish I could have seen Christy Clark’s face when our calls literally shut down her office’s phone lines.
But we can’t stop here. We know Clark is feeling the pressure, but the oil industry really wants this law. That’s why we’re coming together with our partner organizations to organize a coordinated day of action against the new law. And to make sure our message is heard loud and clear, we want to take out hard-hitting newspaper ads in Victoria and the home ridings of Clark and her environment minister, Mary Polak.

As new Canadian, I know the importance of these parks first hand. I grew up with my family in a dense concrete jungle in Hong Kong, and it was Canadian provincial parks that helped my family fall in love with nature. I still remember sitting with my mom in awe in the parks of Vancouver Island. I still remember the first time we saw the Alberta rockies. And I still remember my first hike in the parks of Nova Scotia. I fell in love with Canada through its parks, and our parks are still one of our country’s truly great treasures.
The law just passed gives oil, gas and mining companies the power to open up BC’s provincial parks for industrial activity. Resource companies will now be able to drill exploratory wells, build roads and dig giant test pits, all in the name of pipeline and transmission line “research”.
Unless we act now to change this law, some of the most beautiful parks in Canada could be opened up to industrial development. This would set a dangerous national precedent as oil, gas and mining companies scramble to extract as many fossil fuel resources as possible from deep below the soil.
Thousands of us have already spoken out, but now we need to up our game to make sure our pressure is felt.
